We keep to a short list of small lodges right at the base of the volcanoes, chosen mainly for how close they sit to the permit office and trailheads — a genuine advantage on a trek where the forest access itself, not the accommodation, is the whole point of the trip.
Guest counts stay low across the properties we use, and most have direct sightlines to the volcanoes from the dining area, which makes for a good place to sit with a coffee before the morning's trekking briefing.
Rwanda's tourism infrastructure around Volcanoes National Park has matured quickly in recent years, and we've adjusted our lodge partnerships accordingly rather than sticking with the first ones we ever used.
