Ethiopia
Highlands & Ancient Churches

Ethiopia

Ethiopia is a different kind of trip from our safari and summit work further south — highland trekking through the Simien Mountains, and the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela and the historic north, carved directly into volcanic bedrock and still in active use today.

We build Ethiopia itineraries privately around trekking and cultural routes rather than wildlife, working with local guides who know the highland trails and historic circuit closely, with Moseville coordinating logistics end to end.

It's a trip for travellers who want altitude, history and genuinely different terrain from the rest of East Africa in one itinerary — get in touch and we'll talk you through what a realistic route looks like.

Where We Go

See Ethiopia, Region By Region

Simien Mountains

Dramatic highland trekking terrain with sheer escarpments and endemic wildlife including gelada monkeys and walia ibex.

Lalibela

Eleven medieval churches carved directly into volcanic rock, still active places of worship and one of the most singular sights on the continent.

Addis Ababa

The usual arrival point and a genuinely interesting capital in its own right, with a coffee culture that predates most of the world's.

Simien Mountains, Ethiopia

Accommodation through the Simien Mountains ranges from simple guesthouses to a handful of proper lodges along the trekking route, and we choose based on which nights genuinely need a comfortable bed after a long trekking day versus which can run on a simpler community-run guesthouse.

At this altitude, heating and hot water aren't guaranteed conveniences, and we're upfront with guests about which nights are more rustic than others before the trip starts, rather than letting it be a surprise.

In Lalibela and Addis Ababa, we favour smaller, locally owned guesthouses with genuine character over international hotel chains.

Why Our Guides Know Ethiopia

Ethiopia runs on relationships with local trekking and cultural guides who know the Simien trails and the Lalibela circuit far better than any outside operator could — our role is choosing the right people for those legs and making sure the logistics between them, flights, transfers, altitude pacing, actually hold together as one trip rather than a series of disconnected bookings.

From The Field

Hear From Travellers Who Went To Ethiopia

"Lalibela at dawn, before the day's other visitors arrived, was arranged specifically because our guide knew it was worth the early start. It was the single best morning of the trip."
